Currently reading: Het Verborgen Raderwerk: Over Tijd, Machines En Bewustzijn (1990) by Douwe Draaisma ๐Ÿ“š

I’m re-reading this book on AI that I first read more than 20 years ago. Itโ€™s still a fascinating read, in light of the new wave of AI tech that became public recently.

๐Ÿ“š Finished reading: The Stoic Challenge by William B. Irvine. Unfortunately, not nearly as good as A Guide to the Good Life.

๐Ÿ“š Started reading The Stoic Challenge by William B. Irvine. Very curious how it compares to A Guide to the Good Life!

๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽต Currently re-reading: Hearing and Writing Music: Professional Training for Today’s Musician by Ron Gorow

Philosophical, theoretical and practical: easily the best book on music theory I know.

Finished reading: In de huid van de Boeddha by Paul van der Velde ๐Ÿ“š

This is a great book that gives a lot of different historical perspectives on Buddhism in general. The influence of 19th century esotericism on โ€˜Westernโ€™ Buddhism was totally new to me and quite mind blowing.

๐Ÿ“š My oldest daughter and I are starting a new experiment: reading the same book together, chapter by chapter. The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle was recommended to her by friends, and I already wanted to read it for a long time. Off we go.

Started reading: Raising Good Children by Thomas Lickona ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ“š Excited to begin reading Synesthesia by Richard E. Cytowic. Very curious to find out how the field has evolved since my student days. I also like the look and feel of the MIT Press Essential Knowledge book series.

Finished re-reading: Ja-maar wat als alles lukt? / druk 1 (2005) by Berthold Gunster. A ‘positive psychology’ book I already read when I was a lot younger. Most of the concepts mentioned resonate a lot better with me now Iโ€™m older. ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ—ž Another great photo-essay in the World Through a Lens series from the New York Times. This time by @craigmod, who happens to be a registered user on micro.blog. Unfortunately, he doesnโ€™t seem to be very active over here. Iโ€™m considering becoming a member of his special projectsโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ—žI love the World through a Lens series in the New York Times.

The Transfixing Beauty of Starling Murmurations. Great photography and beautifully written by Sรธren Solkรฆr.

โ€œThat was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my entire life,โ€ she said. I had to agree with her.

Finished reading: Het Achterhuis by Anne Frank ๐Ÿ“š

Currently reading: On Benefits by Lucius Annaeus Seneca ๐Ÿ“š

Currently reading: Mirror, Mirror & A History Of The Human Love Affair With Reflection by Mark Pendergrast ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ“š Halfway through Warren Ellis’ Nina Simone’s Gum and itโ€™s great! This fragment made me smile:

โ€œTrying to be cool and totally not. I was instantly soaked in perspiration and I undid the fourth button on my best floral shirt. Three buttons is day time, four is for concerts.โ€

๐Ÿ“š Very excited to read this book I got as a gift from friends!

Written by one of my favourite musicians about one of my favourite musicians: Nina Simone’s Gum by Warren Ellis.

๐Ÿ“š After years (!) of off and on reading, I finally finished A Phenomenology of Landscape (1997) by Christopher Tilley. โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

Not an easy read, but for me, it was a great introduction to contemporary archeological methodology, as well as phenomenological philosophy.

๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽต Re-reading In the Field - The Art of Field Recording.

I recently upgraded my audio recording kit, which made me excited again about sound art and artists involved in field recording. Itโ€™s a joy to read about the practices of Annea Lockwood, Andrea Polli and Steven Feld.

๐Ÿ“š The current situation in Gaza made me think again about this thought provoking book by Dominique Moรฏsi: The Geopolitics of Emotion: How Cultures of Fear, Humiliation, and Hope are Reshaping the World. It really is a clash of predominant cultural emotions: fear versus humiliation.

๐Ÿ“š Finished reading The places that scare you by Pema Chรถdrรถn. This book proved to be an excellent introduction to Buddhism for me. Mainly because Chรถdrรถn has a very accessible writing style. But also because a lot of Buddhist concepts are pretty similar to those in Stoicism.

๐Ÿ“š currently reading: Fantoomgroei

๐Ÿ“š According to my Goodreads list I already started reading A Distant Mirror years back, but the bookmark revealed I never got past the foreword. This time, Iโ€™m determined to read it all the way to the end, since it will be great research for my upcoming project on city bells.

๐Ÿ—ž Great essay by Timothy Snyder: The American Abyss

“The Republican Party is a coalition of two types of people: those who would game the system (most of the politicians, some of the voters) and those who dream of breaking it (a few of the politicians, many of the voters).”

๐Ÿ“šCurrently reading: Natuurdagboek by Nescio.
