🎵 My week in music (week #5 & 6 2021)

The past two weeks I delved into the beautiful sounds and music of Jon Hassell. I really love his unique blend of World Music and Ambient Electronica.

And in honour of Chick Corea I gave some of his compositions a listen too.

🎵 RIP Chick Corea. I vividly remember first listening to his music. The CD Verve Jazz Masters Vol. 20 was my introduction to jazz music, around 1994. Captain Marvel was my favourite song on it. His approachable but distinctive style made jazz way less alienating to me.

🎵 One of the positive side effects of the pandemic: we just made a last minute decision to attend a streaming concert by Laura Marling. From the comforts of our home. And it’s (almost) just as great.

🎵 My week in music (week #3 & #4 2021)

I took some time to update my meditation playlist with music I turned out to already have in my digital music library for more than 15 years?! Like the beautiful album Baobab by Guem (who coincidentally passed away just last week…).

🎵 My week in music (week #2 2021)

David Byrne / Talking Heads are among my favourite artists ever. I wasn’t too familiar with Fear of Music (1979) yet. Animals is a great song.

🎵 I’m not an avid fan of Jacob Collier, let alone that I ever really listened to Charlie Puth’s music, but this Instagram livestream of them both chit-chatting through their keyboards is really something else.

🎵 My week in music (week #1 2021)

Thundercat’s music is definitely not for every occasion, but It is What it is is a masterpiece.

🎵 My week in music (week #53 2020)

Of course, in the last week of the year, I listened to a several best-albums-of-2020 lists. And despite this crazy year, I think creativity flowed in just as many (if not more) unexpected and exciting ways as other years.

🎵 My week in music (week #52 2020)

Finally sat down to give Bob Dylan’s Murder Most Foul a thorough listen. It felt almost like a spiritual consultation with the master himself. In many ways my song of the year.

🎵 My week in music (week #51 2020)

Highlight of the week was definitely Sounds of Sudan (1986). I remember renting this CD from the local library back in the early 90s and listened to it for days in a row. Excellent recording quality and a great introduction to Afro-Arab music.

🎥 The Mandalorian ★★★★

I’m not a big Star Wars fan, but The Mandalorian was totally worth the watch. Of course Jon Favreau deserves all the praise but to me the most impressive feature of the series is actually the theme song and original music composed by Ludwig Göransson. 🎵

🎵 My week in music (week #50 2020)

Particularly enjoyed Paolo Conte’s Azzurro and Gli Impermeabili. I listened to his music a lot in my student days…

🎵Cabaret Voltaire are still going strong. Love their latest album Shadow of Fear ❤️

🎵 Now playing Actress - Turin (feat. Aura T-09) ❤️

🎵 My week in music (week #49 2020)

The Bleep Top 10 Albums of the Year 2020 list is one of my favourite end-of-year playlists and this year was no different. Lyra Pramuk, Actress and Tara Clerkin Trio will end up on my personal list as well.

🎵 Love the ‘Build your Radio Station’ feature of Concertino!

🎵 The Prodigal Son - Ry Cooder (2018) ★★★★★

What a boss. Nobody’s fault but mine is my favourite, a version of Blind Willie Johnson’s classic song only Ry Cooder could have made. Heavily processed sounds, but with a very traditional and organic feel nonetheless.

🎵My week in music (week #48 2020)

These little ones were just added to my collection of decent quality headphones.

I’m pretty impressed: noise cancellation is good, spatial audio with head tracking is simply amazing.

I think we’ve got every 🎧 use case covered now…

🎵 Alphons Diepenbrock: Symphonische Suite ‘Elektra’

Alphons Diepenbrock (1862 - 1921) was and still is a very under appreciated Dutch composer. Although autodidactic as a composer, his music sounds very original, somewhere in between Mahler and Debussy.

🎵My week in music (week #47 2020)

Listened to a lot of great work from the 80s by percussionist David van Tieghem. His album These things happen (1984) is one of the best avant-garde instrumental pop albums ever.

🎵 My week in music (week #46)

Dirty Sanchez is the best song on Iggy Pop’s Free, though the lyrics seem to suggest otherwise

”This online porn is drivin’ me nuts. Try to implicate desires. That are not my desires. Just because I like big tits. Doesn’t mean I like big dicks.”

”Where’s that bee and where’s that honey? Where’s my God and where’s my money. Unreal values, crass distortion. Unwed mothers need abortion. Kind of brings to mind ol’ young King Tut (He did it now). Tried to make it real — compared to what?!”

Gene McDaniels 💬🎵

🎵 My week in music (week #45 2020)

Pole - Fading

”Inspired by his mother’s Alzheimer’s, the German ambient-dub musician crafts a masterfully melancholy lament that takes his signature crackle and pop into unsettling new terrain.”

🎵 My week in music (week #44 2020)

Reconnecting with Max/MSP while getting into the fine art of campanology for an upcoming project on bells.
