🎥 Thor: Ragnarok (2017) ★★★½
I liked this one better than the first two Thor films, mainly because it is just incredibly funny. Can you ever go wrong with Jeff Goldblum? But the ultimately tragic character of The Hulk, making silly jokes was a bit overkill in this regard.

I liked it for its beautiful cinematography; this must have been an epic challenge for director Cy Endfield, and very demanding for cast and crew. But otherwise I found it a very problematic celebration of colonialism.

In spite of some dubious directing choices (Kirk Douglas as a womanising scientist just didn’t fit) I certainly enjoyed this men-on-a-mission movie, if only for the loose historical reenactment (and a great skiing chase scene halfway).

Watched this one out of pure nostalgia, and was pretty sceptical beforehand. I remembered ‘not getting’ the movie at the time (when I was around 8 years old), but it turned out to be even worse than I thought. One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. (Twice…)

I didn’t see this great comedy at the time and I also kind of regret that I didn’t read more books by Roald Dahl in my childhood. This adaptation by and with Danny DeVito was more than worth the watch. And the whole family agreed.

Yesterday we watched the first two Spider-Man movies by Jon Watts in preparation for the most recent one that just came out. If all the reviews are to believed, it will not be disappointing.

Great documentary with a lot of behind the scenes and sometimes hilarious rehearsal footage, and with a nice build up to the film’s climax: the live registration of ‘The Elvis Summer Festival’ at the International Hotel in Las Vegas.

Documentary by Jonathan Blank on Dutch culture and social democracy. Comprehensive, but spread too thin on many of the subjects covered, like the rise of populism, and even neglecting real threats to democracy like right-wing extremism.
🎥 Nebraska (2013) ★★★★ Tonight, we watched another great film by Alexander Payne. Beautifully shot in black and white, and a great plot portraying a moving father-son story.

Loved this film by Alexander Payne. Despite the very tragic story, many scenes were very recognizable, having two daughters of roughly the same age myself.

Now both of our kids are getting old enough for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I expect to (re)watch a lot more of them with the whole family this autumn.
📺 Yesterday, we finished the second (and final) season of Feel Good. After a somewhat lukewarm start of the season, the last couple of episodes were full of intertwining storylines and great acting by the whole cast, which made the series end on a high note. ★★★★ 🏳️🌈

Very intriguing documentary by Dutch director David Kleijwegt, about the tragic life of soul singer Donny Hathaway, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and ultimately committed suicide at age 33.
